At a birthday party, one-half drank only lemonade, one-third drank only cola, fifteen people drank neither, and nobody drinks both. How many people were at the party?

Let Total no. of people at party is x. Then as per given we have
x/2+x/3+15=x which result x=90

Also 1/2 +1/3 =3/6+2/6=5/6. solve for 1/6x=15. 6X15=90 is right if you look at it that way.

50%+33 1/3%+ 15 people?=83 1/3% + 15 people. To come up with 90 I guess you have one dwarf and a very small midget.

83 1/3% + 15= 100%. Which means 16 2/3% or 50/3% =15. So 1% = 15x3/50=45/50. Therefor 100% =45x100/50=90.

tatz a wrong conculsion.....we cant take tat as x/6 itz x/3 alone.since itz given as one third drink cola not one third of another half . and by d way tatz wrng ans also ,if yu solve using x/6 ans is 45 people.

Praveen we can take question in this way also Since nobody drinks both all the events are independent. So in X people X/2 fraction of people took lemonade. So in the remaining (i.e., X/2 fraction) 1/3 rd fraction of people took cola i,e., X/6 of the people took cola.+15 members X=X/2+X/6+15 which gives 40 people

Let the number of people at the party be n n . Then, the number of people who drank lemonade was 1 2 n \frac {1}{2} n and cola, 1 3 n \frac {1}{3} n . The remaining 15 people who drank nothing was:

n 1 2 n 1 3 n = 15 ( 6 3 2 6 ) n = 1 6 n = 15 n = 15 × 6 = 90 n - \frac {1}{2} n - \frac {1}{3} n = 15 \quad \Rightarrow \left( \dfrac {6-3-2}{6} \right) n = \frac {1}{6} n = 15\quad \Rightarrow n = 15\times 6 = \boxed{90}

Let's use geometry. Half means 180 360 \frac{180}{360} , if we plus 1 3 \frac{1}{3} = 300 360 \frac{300}{360}

360 300 = 15 p 360-300 = 15p

p = 60 / 15 = 4 p = 60/15 = 4

360 4 = \frac{360}{4} = 90 90

x/2 +x/3+15=x , as x is an assumption for total no. of people in the party. this on further calculation gives x=90.

Half of the party goers drank only lemonade so

l = p 2 l = \frac {p}{2}

Only a third drank cola so

c = p 3 c = \frac {p}{3}

And 15 15 drank neither. From this information we get the equation

l + c + 15 = p l + c + 15 = p

Since l = p 2 l = \frac {p}{2} and c = p 3 c = \frac {p}{3} we can substitute them in

( p 2 ) + ( p 3 ) + 15 = p (\frac {p}{2}) + (\frac {p}{3}) + 15 = p

Cross multiplying the two fractions gives us

5 p 6 + 15 = p \frac {5p}{6} + 15 = p

Re-arrange it to get p p

p 15 = 5 p 6 6 p 90 = 5 p p 90 = 0 p = 90 p - 15 = \frac {5p}{6} \Rightarrow 6p - 90 = 5p \Rightarrow p - 90 = 0 \Rightarrow p = 90

The amount of people at the party was 90 90
