Apartment And The Lifts

Logic Level 3

There is apartment with 14 floors, the floors are numbered from 1 to 14. You’re in this apartment, but your floor is unknown. There are 2 lifts and you have to get to a lift urgently. How can you guarantee to get in a lift as fast as you can? Which floors should the lifts be at? (Lifts can be in separate floors.)

Write the answer like first the smaller floor, then the upper floor. For example:

If the lifts are on the floors 2 and 5, write 25

Or if the lifts are both on Floor 14, type 1414

Love it? Then, here is Apartment and The Lifts 2!

The answer is 411.

Since there are two lifts, divide 14 by 2 so that each would service two different set of floors. The first would catch the lower 7 floors and the other the top 7 floors. They should stay in the middle of those sets for the shortest reaching time, and that middle would be (1 + 7)/2 = 4th floor for the first lift and (8 + 14)/2 = 11th floor for the second one.
