Apply logic part1

Sherlock Holmes received a typical case once again...

The police had found a woman dead on a road due to an accident. They handed the details of the woman to Sherlock Holmes. He called the woman's husband and the following conversation took place:

Sherlock: I'm sorry to say, but your wife had died in an accident

Husband: Oh No!! Is it true?

Sherlock: Yes, and don't waste time and come here immediately.

Husband: O.K. I'm coming.

The husband reached there and started crying bitterly.

Then Sherlock announced the name of the culprit.

Who was it?

The woman's husband Sherlock himself The woman's driver The Police

Sherlock never told the husband where the location of the accident was and the husband never asked, so he must already have known where the "accident" took place. Now this doesn't guarantee that the husband killed his wife, but it does mean that he was lying to Sherlock. Technically he could have had someone else commit the act, but that would still make him a murderer by association and thus worthy of arrest.

That's absolutely correct.

Just like I did it. Honestly speaking though this is quite a stupid problem in my opinion.

Plz post more such problems. I am tired of mindlessly calculating and manipulating symbols :)

Wow. Just like Sherlock Holmes. ;)

Lol I just reasoned as Sherlock announced the culprit only after the husband arrived, so the husband is the culprit.

Moreover some of the options can be eliminated leaving fewer options worthy of further examination.

Sherlock Holmes never told the location of the incident, so how did the husband know?

If it was a "typical case" then surely the culprit cannot be Sherlock Holmes because otherwise he would have been jailed for murder a long time ago , creating a contradiction. The same goes for the Police.

Now suppose that the Husband knew exactly where the crash occurred. This means that he has no reason to say "Oh No!! Is it true?" if he is truly innocent. Similarly if he didn't know where the crash occurred then how did he know where Sherlock was? This means that if we assume that he is innocent then we obtain a contradiction. Hence, he must be the culprit (either directly or indirectly).
