Area of a Race

Geometry Level 2

Marco and Jake start at points A and B respectively on the starting-line for a race.

In the first 5 seconds of the race, Marco sprints 50 meters straight away from the start-line to point C and Jake sprints 30 meters, parallel to Marco's path, to point D.

In the second 5 seconds of the race, Marco sprints another 50 meters straight away from the start-line to point E and Jake sprints another 30 meters, parallel to Marco's path, to point F.

Are the two irregular quadrilaterals ACDB and AEFB similar?

They are definitely similar. They are definitely not similar. There isn't enough information to know if they are similar or not.

The further Marco gets ahead of Jake, the sharper the angle A-Marco-Jake gets. Therefore, the two quadrilaterals cannot be similar.
