You can use Set Theory for this:

If x is the area of the shaded region which is the intersection of two quarter circles,

Area of the square = Area of the bottom quarter circle + Area of the top quarter circle - x

So x = (4 pi/4 + 4 pi/4) - 4 = 2.28
