ARML Power Round - 1

Algebra Level 2

The Distance Formula in two dimensions is given by:

D = ( x 2 x 1 ) 2 + ( y 2 y 1 ) 2 D = \sqrt{{(x_2-x_1)}^2+{(y_2-y_1)}^2}

Let the taxicab distance be defined as:

D t = x 2 x 1 + y 2 y 1 D_t = |x_2-x_1|+|y_2-y_1|

What is the taxicab distance between ( 5 , 6 ) (5,6) and ( 1 , 2 ) (1,2) ?

D t = x 2 x 1 + y 2 y 1 = 5 1 + 6 2 = 4 + 4 = 8 D_t = |x_2 - x_1| + |y_2 - y_1|\\ =|5-1| + |6-2|\\ =4+4\\ =\boxed{8}
