There are two types of Friedel-Craft reaction: alkylation and acylation. A summary of alkylation is as follows:

Alkylation -- substitutes an alkyl (e.g. methyl, ethyl) group

  • Reagents: A haloalkane ( R X \ce{RX} ) and anhydrous aluminium chloride A l C l X 3 \ce{AlCl3}
  • Conditions: Room temperature; dry inert solvent (ether)
  • Electrophile: A carbocation R X + \boxed{\ce{R+}} (e.g. C H X 3 X + \ce{CH3+} )
  • Equation: C X 6 H X 6 + C X 2 H X 5 C l C X 6 H X 5 C X 2 H X 5 + H C l \ce{C6H6 + C2H5Cl -> C6H5C2H5 + HCl}
