Atwood Dilemma!!!

Classical Mechanics Level pending

In a simple Atwood machine , with masses M1 and M2 (M1 > M2), the masses are moving with an acceleration (magnitude) 3m/sec^2 . Find the ratio between M1 and M2 . Type answer till 2 decimal places.

The answer is 1.85.

2 solutions

Drawing FBD,

we get , M1G - T = M1a (a is acceleration) T - M2G = M2a

adding both the equations we get

(M1 - M2)G = (M1 + M2)a so , (M1 - M2)G / M1 + M2 = a

Putting the values of a and G as 3 and 10, M1 - M2 / M1 + M2 = 0.3

Multiply the left hand side by M2/M2, Let the ratio be x.

x - 1 / x + 1 = 0.3

x = 1.85

(m1-m2)g=(m1+m2)a

(m1+m2)/(m1-m2)=g/a.

By componendo and dividendo we get, m1/m2= (g+a)/(g-a)=13/7

=1.85
