Here is the setup to win the game:

White Black Reason
1. Ra8 Kxa8 Force check
2. Qc8+ Rb8 Defend with rook
3. Qc6+ Rb7 Next check
4. Qa4+ Kb8 To prevent rook defense
5. Qe8+ Qd8 For Black, only option to defend with Queen
6. Qd8+ Checkmate

So we have y = D = 4 y = D = 4 and x = 8 x = 8 , which shows that y x = 65536 y^x = \boxed{65536} .

As pointed out in the reports, Black can delay play to mate in 8

After the 4.Qa4 + , black can play Qa6.
1.Ra8+ Kxa8
2.Qxc8+ Rb8
3.Qc6+ Rb7
4.Qa4+ Qa6
5.Qe8+ Rb8
6.Qc6+ Rb7
7.Qc8+ Rb8
8.Qxa6#

One way to do that is by moving rook to A8, then black king is checked and is forced to attack that rook, then by moving queen to c8 black king is checkmated by two moves only. so the answer is Ra8.

Nice checkmate!
