Algebra Level 3

The graph of the equation h = a t 2 + b t + c h=-at^2+bt+c , describes how the height of a baseball, h h , changes over time, t t . If you alter the c term, what will be affected?

I. The h-intercept

II. The maximum value of h

III. The t-intercept

III I and II I, II, and III I and III II and III II I None

Clearly, changing c will change h, so 1 and 2 for sure. Now the t intercept is the value of t when h = 0. changing c will result in a new quadratic equation with different roots; so 3.

Changing the c will shift the entire parabola up or down, so the intercepts and the maximum value will be affected.
