a + b = 7 , a b = 12 a+b=7, ab=12 a 2 + b 2 = ( a + b ) 2 2 a b = 25 \Rightarrow a^2+b^2=(a+b)^2-2ab=25 Hence the sides are 3 , 4 , 5 3,4, 5 . Using Apollonius theorem, A B 2 + B C 2 = 2 ( B X 2 + X A 2 AB^2+BC^2=2(BX^2+XA^2 B X = 25 2 ( 2.5 ) 2 2 = 2.5 2 2 = 2.5 \Rightarrow BX=\sqrt{\frac{25-2•(2.5)^2}{2}}=2.5\sqrt{\frac{2}{2}}=\boxed{2.5}
