Working backwards is one approach of solving this problem.

4th temple: he has 100 dollars ( from 50 *2) and he gave 100 away which leaves him 0. 3rd temple: He must start with 150. After giving 100 away he is left with 50. 2nd temple: he must start with 175. after giving 100, he has 75 left. 1st temple: he must start with 93.75. Money doubles to 187.5. He gave 100 and left with 87.5.
