Ben's test score

Algebra Level 1

Ben is taking a maths test that has 100 questions which is composed of four topics : Algebra,Geometry,Number Theory and Calculus.Before the test,Ben did some practice questions.He did 32 Algebra problems and got 28 correct.He did 8 Geometry problems and got 4 correct.He did 62 Number Theory problems and got 58 correct.He did 30 Calculus problems and got 10 correct.The test is composed of 16 Algebra problems, 20 Geometry problems,31 Number Theory problems and 33 Calculus problems.How many points can Ben expect to score,given that the difficulty of the practice problems are the same as that of the test problems?

The answer is 64.

you can easily solve this question using proportion

wrong q(practice) : correct q(practice) :: wrong q(test) : correct q(test)

algebra- 32 : 28 :: 16 : a on solving a=14

geometry- 8 : 4 :: 20 : g on solving g=10

number theory- 62 : 58 :: 31 : n on solving n= 29

calculus- 30 : 10 :: 33 : c on solving c=11

total points= 14+10+29+11= 64

(In the practice)

                           Total marks                     Got marks             Probability

Algebra 32 , 28 , 28 / 32 = 7/8

Geometry 8 , 4 , 4 / 8 = 1/2

Number Theory 62 , 58 , 58 / 62 = 29 / 31

, Calculus 30 , 10 , 10 / 30 = 1/ 3

                                                (In The test)

                            Total marks Probability of Got marks

                                                                        obtaining marks

Algebra 16 , 16 * 7 / 8 , = 14

Geometry 20 , 20 * 1 / 2 , = 10

Number Theory 31 , 31 * 29 / 31 , = 29

Calculus 33 , 33 * 1 / 3 , = 11

                                                                              Total Marks    = 64

I am not a able to draw the table I wanted so,It's like that....it's is worse

For the Algebra for 32 questions he got 28 right proportionately for 16 he would have got 14 right (half of 32 = 16 & half of 28 is 14). Applying the same principle for the other subjects he would have got 10 in Geometry; 29 in Number Theory and 11 in Calculus. The total is 64.

Algebra= 28/32 correct which is 87.5% Geometry=4/8 correct 50% Number theory= 58/62 correct 93.55% Calculus= 10/30 correct 33.33%

(.875 16) + (.50 20) + (.9355 31) + (.3333 33)= 64 multiply the percentage of correct to the number of items in the specific field of math and sum them all up it will give us 64.
