Vincent and Marisa make a bet of $14. Vincent loses the bet. As he hands over a $20 dollar bill, they drop it into a sewage pipe and they are unable to get it. If Vincent and Marisa share the loss equally how much does Vincent owe Marisa now? Source: Mandelbrot

Just before dropping the $20 into sewage Marisa has $14 from bet win and $6 have to be paid to Vincent. Since they share the loss equally. So $6 which would be of Vincent will be shared by both Vincent and Marisa $3 each. Now Marisa have to pay only $3 to Vincent. ------(1)
Now $14 of Marisa will be shared by both of them. So Vincent have to pay Marisa $7. -----(2)
Using fact (1) and (2) we have
Vincent have to pay $7-$3=$4 to Marisa.
