Birthday Candles

Logic Level 3

Since he was 40 years old, Grandpa Edward has celebrated all of his birthdays by using candles shaped in the digits from 0 to 9 to indicate his age. First, he bought the candles of numbers 0 and 4. He always kept the candles to use in future birthdays, and only bought a new candle when it was not possible to indicate his age with the current candles. For example, when he was 41, he bought the candle of number 1.

Today, Grandpa Edward is 85 years old. How many candles has he had to buy, to light up his birthday cake throughout the years?

Include the candles of numbers 4 and 0 in your count.

First, note that the units digit goes through all 0 9 0\to 9 digits, so our answer is at least 10 10 . However, we see that 44 77 44\to 77 requires the use of more than one digit, namely 4 7 4\to 7 . We need 4 4 extra digits, bringing the number of candles bought up to 14 \boxed{14} .

Yeah, this is my mistake..i forgot that double number

A clear and concise solution. You can enhance it further by showing that it is possible for Grandpa Edward to use only 14 candles and thus prove that 14 is the infimum.

Shouldn't the answer be 8+4=12 because there is already candles 0 and 4?

This was easy.He obviously needed 0-9 and 4,5,6,7 for 44,55,66,77

I have solve it in that way :D

That was a good one! To solve it you need to notice that he had to buy candles of the same digit at some birthdays. For example when he was 66 although he already had a candle for the number 6 he had to buy a candle that shows the number 6 again because the digits repeat in this birthday.

Adding a tad bit of abstract thinking, if one were to use 6 as 9 and vice versa (considering grandpa minimizes cost) the count comes down to just 13.

Since there were candles from 0-9 then all in all there were 10 candles; Moreover, there were numbers who will be doubled: starting from 44, 55,66,77 since he started at 40 yrs. old and presently he is 85 y/o. so: 10 + 4= 14

0 to 9 plus the doubled numbers of 4,5,6 and 7 sums up to 14

Happy Birthday Grandpa Edward! Reaching 100 you would need 17 candles in TOTAL.
By the way what is your birth date? .. :)
