If an item is the 'n'th from the left in a rank, then there are n-1 items to its left. Similarly for the right. So in a rank with one item which is 6th from the left and 4th from the right there must be (6-1) items to one side and (4-1) items to the other side plus the item itself i.e. (6-1) + (4-1) + 1 = 5+3+1 = 9.
