Boxes with Gold

Level 1

Andy the pirate has found 4 boxes on a certain island, each with a label. Here are the assumptions:

  1. Exactly one of the boxes is telling the truth.
  2. If you open the the box with no gold, then a venomous gas is released.
  3. Andy really wants the gold.

Here are the labels:

Box 1 \textbf{Box 1} : The gold is here.

Box 2 \textbf{Box 2} : The gold is either in box 4 or it's here.

Box 3 \textbf{Box 3} : The gold is in box 1 or it's here.

Box 4 \textbf{Box 4} : The gold is in box 2 or it's here.

Which box should Andy open?

Box 3 Box1 Box 4 Box 2

If box 1 tells the truth, then so would box 3. This cannot happen. If box 2 tells the truth, then so does box 4 and vice-versa. Since one of the boxes must tell the truth, then it's box 3. We know that the gold is not in box 1, then it's in box 3.
