Like 5 apples, 3 oranges, read how many of each digits are there.

1 (One one) 11

11 (Two Ones) 21

21 (One Two, then One One) 1211

1211 (One One, One Two and then Two Ones) 111221

111221 (Three Ones, Two Twos and then One One) 312211

I am using a tablet to type and hence, the notation will not come perfect. So instead, i uploaded an image in the wiki "SAT sequences and series". The image is near the end of the wiki. Please visit and check out the image, it will explain everything. By the way, nice problem :)
