Bug Zapper #1 zapped a fair number of bugs, but Zapper #2, a louder one, zapped 22 more bugs than Zapper #1. However, it was Zapper #3, (Known as "Purple Lightning"), that set all records. It actually zapped 45 more bugs than #2 did. If all 3 zappers zapped a total of 398 bugs in total, how many were zapped Zapper #1 Alone?

We're trying to find the number of bugs #1 zapped so that's x. Then put all the numbers in, (I'm not going thru that) But this is what you come out with:
x=#1's zaps
x+22=#2's zaps
x+22+45=#3's zaps
398=total zaps
So put them all horizontal like this:
x+(x+22)+(x+22+45)+398
Then we put all the variables together and all the other numbers together, like this:
3x+89=398
Then subtract 89 from both sides.
3x+89-89=398-89
On the left we have just 3x left, and on the right, 398-89=309.
So now we have 3x=309
Now, divide both sides by 3.
3 3 x = 3 3 0 9
On the left we have just x, and on the right we have 103, Which is the answer to this problem.
