The area of a rectangle is given by the formula A = L W A = LW where: W = w i d t h W=width and L = l e n g t h L=length

From the figure, W = 5 W=5 and L = 5 + 2 + 5 = 12 L=5+2+5=12

Substituting, we obtain

A = 5 × 12 = A=5\times12= 60 \color{#3D99F6}\large\boxed{60} answer \boxed{\text{answer}}

Yellow: 2 squares 1 x 1 = 1, total area = 2

Blue: 2 squares 2 x 2 = 4, total area = 2 x 4 = 8

Tan: 2 squares, side = 2 + 1 + 2 = 5, area each 5 x 5 = 25, total area = 2 x 25 = 50

Total of all: 2 + 8 +50 = 60
