Let, half the people on a bus exit at each stoppage and no additional passengers board the bus. If on the third stoppage the next to last person exits the bus, then how many people were on the bus?

Let the total number of initial passengers be x x . After the 3 r d 3^{rd} stoppage there was still 1 1 passenger left. So,

x − ( x 2 + x 4 + x 8 ) = 1 x-(\frac x2+\frac x4+\frac x8)=1 ⇒ x − 7 x 8 = 1 \Rightarrow x-\frac{7x}{8}=1 ⇒ x 8 = 1 \Rightarrow \frac x8=1 ⇒ x = 1 × 8 = 8 \Rightarrow x=1\times 8=\color{#0C6AC7} {\boxed {8}}
