Let y be the negative one. If we multiply both sides of the equation by -1, we get

x = y {x = -y} and then x = ( y ) {x = -(-y)} , which is a positive value for x.

However, if we consider x as the negative one, the process above can be repeated equally and we will find a positive value for y. Hence, it can't be determined which of them is the negative one, because both can be.
