Geometry Level 1

Mr. Beilein (BEE-line), the beekeeper, has four hives in a square pattern, with his house in the center of the square. Every day he checks on his bees. He walks in a beeline from his house to one of the hives, and from there along the perimeter of the square to the second, third and fourth hives before returning in a beeline to his house. If the side of the square is 200 m, how far does he walk during this process (in meters)? Round answer to 2 decimal places.

The answer is 882.84.

Mr. Beilein walks 100 2 100\sqrt{2} meters from his house to the first corner, an identical distance from the last corner back to his house, and along 3 sides of the square (600 m) going from hive 1 to hive 2 to hive 3 to hive 4. So total = 600 + 200 2 600 + 200\sqrt{2} meters, or 882.84 m.
