Sugar= C 12 H 22 O 11 C_{12}H_{22}O_{11}

Molecular mass of sugar

= 12 × 12 + 1 × 22 + 16 × 11 =12\times\ 12+1\times\ 22+16\times\ 11

= 342 =342


so the percentage of carbon in sugar

= 144 342 × 100 =\dfrac{144}{342}\times 100
