Calculating Gear Ratios

Algebra Level 2

In the differential of a truck, the pinion gear has 12 teeth, which mesh and drive the ring gear with 45 teeth. How many times must the differential spin to turn the tire once?

0.26 times 3.42 times 3.75 times 4.1 times

x = R i n g G e a r P i n i o n G e a r x=\frac{Ring Gear}{Pinion Gear} x = 45 12 x=\frac{45}{12} x = 3.75 x=3.75

Therefore the differential must spin 3.75 times for every time the tire turns once.

Inserting commas between equations make it easier to read. Still, a well written solution!
