The reason why Oxygen may not be present in the early atmosphere is, if Oxygen had been present, the early forms of cell membrane in the form of bubbles, that is hypothesized to have formed in the shores of the primodial soup, would've oxidized the cell membrane, and life as we know of, may not have formed.
