I expanded ( a + 1 ) ( a + 2 ) ( a − 4 ) as a 3 − a 2 − 1 0 a − 8 = a ( a 2 − a − 1 0 ) − 8 = a ( 0 ) − 8 = − 8 .

Given that a 2 − a − 1 0 = 0 ⟹ a 2 = a + 1 0 . Now, we have:
( a + 1 ) ( a + 2 ) ( a − 4 ) = ( a 2 + 3 a + 2 ) ( a − 4 ) = ( a + 1 0 + 3 a + 2 ) ( a − 4 ) = ( 4 a + 1 2 ) ( a − 4 ) = 4 ( a + 3 ) ( a − 4 ) = 4 ( a 2 − a − 1 2 ) = 4 ( a 2 − a − 1 0 − 2 ) = 4 ( 0 − 2 ) = − 8 Note that a 2 − a − 1 0 = 0
