Given a = b
then we can derive as follows:
=
=
(a + b) (a - b) = b (a - b)
(a + b) = b
(b + b) = b
2b = b
2 = 1 !

Since a and b are equal when we divide by (a - b) we are actually dividing by zero which is not allowed. The best way to always spot these types of tricks is to just substitute a number for both a and b right from the start and work through the algebra with numbers you can always spot the divide by zero right away.
