Canine Agility Course

Algebra Level 2

My aunt and uncle have a Labrador Retriever named Tessa. Tessa is practicing with a basic agility course set up in the backyard.

She clears obstacle α \alpha in 10.1 seconds, and then passes obstacle β \beta in 6.5 seconds.

She passes obstacle γ \gamma and θ \theta in the same amount of time, passes obstacle χ \chi in 8.3 seconds, and finishes the course.

If the total course took exactly 30.0 seconds to pass, what is χ θ \chi-\theta ?

The answer is 5.75.

We are given most of the times and the total time, so we first need to add up the values and subtract them from the total.

10.1 + 6.5 + 8.3 = 24.9 10.1 + 6.5 + 8.3 = 24.9 , and 30.0 24.9 = 5.1 30.0 - 24.9 = 5.1 , so γ \gamma + θ \theta must add up to 5.1. Since they are equal, we can just divide 5.1 in half to get 2.55.

Careful, though! 2.55 is not our answer, because the problem is asking for χ \chi - θ \theta , not just θ \theta (or γ \gamma ).

8.3 2.55 = 5.75 8.3 - 2.55 = 5.75 , and that is indeed the correct answer.
