let starting point be O (0,0) then both travel 12m in opposite direction(say in east(first man) and west(2nd man) ). Now first man must be at P (12,0) in east and second must be at Q (-12,0) in west. Now they move for another 5m. So first man moves in north direction to 5m and will be at A(12,5) and Second man moves in south direction to 5m and will be at B(-12,-5). So Distance between them is AB={(12-(-12))^2 + (5-(-5))^2}^(1/2)=26 (distance formula)
