We see that x + 9 2 x + 9 = 0.56 \frac{x+9}{2x+9}=0.56 . Simplifying and cross multiplying, we find that 25 x + 225 = 28 x + 126 25x+225=28x+126 . Manipulating this equation finds that x x equals 33. Therefore the first student scored 33, and the second one scored 42. You can plug this back in and find that it works.

one can just use a trial and error method
i.e. a+b *56/100
