White to move: \displaystyle\text{White to move:}

1. Rh4+, gxh4+ \displaystyle\text{1. Rh4+, gxh4+}

2. Kf4, g5+ \displaystyle\text{2. Kf4, g5+}

3. Kf5, g4 \displaystyle\text{3. Kf5, g4}

4. hxg4# \displaystyle\text{4. hxg4\#}

Can't you just move the rook to g4?

The result will be stalemate, as the Black will not have a valid next move after White's Rg4.

I can do it in two moves.

Roger Richards - 4 years, 1 month ago

it 3 moves (w) rook E/4 to D/4 - (b) Pawn H/3 to G/4 only move black has (w) pawn H/5 to G/5 (b) king H/5 to G/5 only move black has . (w) rook D/4 to G/4 check mate ... White check mate 3 moves .

Roger Richards - 4 years, 1 month ago

Rook to E5?

William Joseph - 4 years, 1 month ago

Move rook to g4

Hammad Rahman - 4 years, 1 month ago

How about rook to E3. The only move black has is pawn to G4. Then take rook to E5. There checkmate in 2 moves.

because when you move to E/5 (b) pawn G/6 to G/5 block your check mate . if you take it he take rook

Roger Richards - 4 years, 1 month ago

pawn to h4. black can either take the pawn or not (doesn't matter). then rook to e5. checkmate. 2 moves. let me know if i did this wrong! thank you!

Its not checkmate. Black moves pawn to g5.

Iulia Toader - 4 years, 1 month ago

I thought of this also. It does not work. If white moves to H-4 and black captures, the white king is in check. Whites must move the king or capture the pawn with the rook. Not good.

White pawn to H4, black pawn at G5 takes pawn at H4, white king moves to G4, checkmate

he don't have to take the white pawn . there for 2 moves don't work . but i was wrong about the three moves

Roger Richards - 4 years, 1 month ago

The answer is one move --- Rook moves one square up facing black pawn and King behind black pawn. Black must make a move. the only move black can make is to move the black pawn forward which puts the King in check. There is no other move black can make. Checkmate.

That's not how chess works. Moves that put yourself in check are not considered valid moves. And if a player has no valid moves on their turn, it's a stalemate.

Phillip Huang - 4 years, 1 month ago

That is stalemate

Wayne King - 4 years, 1 month ago

that is stalemate because the king also has to be in direct check not just trapped.

Kf3,g4 xg4+,Kg5 Rf4,h5 Rf5#

@Posa Bogdan Rf5 is not a checkmate since black pawn will capture the Rook in that position. After Rf5, black's move will be gxf5

Indeed I was wrong

no, you can't. post some moves and we'll show you how it doesn't work ;)

József Inczefi - 2 years, 6 months ago

Unless I'm very mistaken, the minimum number of white moves to mate is 2

Mark Billingham - 4 years, 1 month ago

it's 2 : Re5, so the only move for black is Pg4, then Pg4#

Ovidiu-Leonard Cozan - 4 years, 1 month ago

Log in to reply

That doesn't work because Re5 prevents Black from moving (Pg4 is moving into check) so that is a stalemate.

Mark Billingham - 4 years, 1 month ago

@Mark Billingham - you're right, thanks! i'm beginner, no escuse...
