5 solutions

  1. .... g4+
  2. Kh4 Rxh2#

Two errors on your chess move recording. Error 1: It's g4+ since you put the king in check. Error 2: It's Rxh2# since the h2 pawn must be killed. :P

  1. ...... g4+
  2. Kh4. Rxh2# (thanks Sharky )

hence the first move is pawn on g5 to g4

Moderator note:

For completeness, we should explain why there are no other "mate in 2" approaches. This is often trickier and involves some kind of exhaustive search.

But after it moves to h4 the only way to put it in check again is to move the black bishop to g4. The bishop would have nothing protecting it so the white king could take it. I think 3 moves makes the most sense. Maybe the black King could be brought to h6 behind the rightmost pawn after the pawn is moved down to check the king. Then on the third move, put the white King in checkmate with the bishop

The creator of the puzzle didn't mention the white player doesn't get a turn. After the pawn would be moved to g4, the black rook would be taken down

g4 comes with a check, so the rook can't be taken down

Tanuj Chandolia - 5 years ago

No because the King would still be in check if the rook was taken. White must move the king (to H4) to get out of check.

Trah Rown - 5 years ago

By the way , the king can't even take the pawn , so the king was forced to move .

Note that the king can't move up because of the rook , so the only move possible to the king himself is Kh4

Moving pawn from G5 to G4, giving a check

Now king can't take the pawn nor it can move to G2 because a rook is there

Therefore king must move to H4

After that rook takes the pawn at H2 giving a checkmate

This tactic of chess was way easy:

  1. .......g4+
  2. Kh4 (the only move) ..........Rxh2#

Black pawn moves from g5 to g4. Then the white king has to forcefully move to h4. Then black rook cuts the pawn at h2. Check mate! So, the answer is Pawn on g5 \color{#69047E}{\boxed{\text{Pawn on g5}}} .

Wouldn't white bishop take rook after pawn to g4?
