Want a correctIon as M is an alkali metal except lithium. because the first member of either alkali or alkali earth metals show a slightly different behaviour..so as here.
4 K N O 3 → 2 K 2 O + 4 N O 2 + O 2
Wouldn't this happen?

Nitrates of alkali metals do not give nitrogen dioxide when they are heated. They rather form O 2 and M N O 2 where M is a alkali metal (except Lithium).
