Nitrates of alkali metals do not give nitrogen dioxide when they are heated. They rather form O 2 {O}_{2} and M N O 2 MN{O}_{2} where M M is a alkali metal (except Lithium).

Want a correctIon as M M is an alkali metal except lithium. because the first member of either alkali or alkali earth metals show a slightly different behaviour..so as here.

4 K N O 3 2 K 2 O + 4 N O 2 + O 2 4~KNO_3 \rightarrow 2~K_2O + 4~NO_2 + O_2

Wouldn't this happen?
