chess endgame problem

Logic Level 5

in this position it is black turn to move,

what is the best move for black?

The bottom left corner square has coordinates(1,1). Each piece has a value: Rook=5 Bishop=3 ,Pawn=1, king=4 Submit your answer as product of the piece value and coordinate(V *X *Y) . for example , if Rf7 is your move(6,7), then the answer will be 5 * 6 * 7 =210

Clarification:

1.White and Black plays optimally

2.if their is no good move for black(meaning he losing anyway) , input the number 0 as your answer

3.if you queen the d pawn, the piece value will be 1

The answer is 63.

solution-Bc7 is the best move in the position

this position is very complicated, it comes from my own game ,in daily chess tournament
https://www.chess.com/daily/game/184663088?username=israelofek .

lets look at some possible variations

  1. … Bc7 2. Be3 f2 3. Rf1 d1=Q 4. Rxd1 f1=R+ 5. Rxf1 Rxf1+ -

  2. .. Bc7 1. Rg7+ Kxh6 2. Rg1 Kh5 3. Bd4 f2 4. Rf1 e3 -

  3. .. Bc7 1. Rd1 f2 2. Rf1 d1=Q 3. Rxd1 f1=Q+ 4. Rxf1 Rxf1+

all of them are winning position for black . according to the engines Bc7 is the only move that give to black a big advantage . if someone don't have the latest version of stockfish and komodo engines ,here is a snapshot

Why not ...f2?

Then Bxf2 Rxf2 Rg7+ (any move) and then d8Q. Then Rxh2 is not checkmate as the king can move to g1.

note that if….f2. Bxf2 Rxf2 2. Rg7+now black can play Bxg7 !3.if d8=Q ,black play Rf1+ follow by d1=Q wining for black.

the reason f2 is not the best move ,because white will play Rf1 now its giving the white king way to join the game(since g2 square no longer protected) and to protect more square like this line 1... f2 2. Rf1 Bc7 3. Kg2 …this is still very complicated, the engine evaluation is a draw, but i would take white evey day in this position.

anyways Bc7 give to black a big advantage regardless of white responds

When I put the position into stockfish, it said that f2 is equal to bc7, however, after further analysis, I agree with your move. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Why not Rf6 because Bc7 means black rook gone so 5 pts loss

if Rf6 then white can promote the d pawn to a queen.note after Bc7 white can’t capture the rook because black then will play f2 and there is no way for white to prevent black from queening one of his pawns in the next few moves. for example Bc7 6. Bxf8 f2 7. Rf1 e3 black is winning, the engine give -13( meaning black has 13 points advantage)

What if I move my rook 1 square right i.e at (7,8) . White rook must attack mine. Then I will use my pawn to get a queen

if rook g8 then rook d1 and black can’t defend the d2 pawn and can not make any progress. take look from this position and try to find a good move for black .(this very hard it’s look like black should resign) note :the engine give 5+ for white in this position .

Then the white Queen may attack your Rook(black). Obviously in that case white Queen will be attacked by Black King. But the Rook will be lost.🤔🤔

I must point out: lichess has a mathematics community whereas brilliant has a small chess community :)

We could have taken Black Bishop at (8,8). That would also be a good choice.

Alapan Das - 1 year, 5 months ago

It can also be f2.
