let x equal the number of pigs and y equal the number of chickens

x + y = 82 and 4x + 2y = 240

4x + 2(82 - x) = 240

4x - 2x = 240 - 164

x = 38. there are 38 pigs

But i do believe its possible to solve this from another method if algebra wasnt there.. Shockingly now the answer is different but the method makes sense

I agree that you could probably solve this without algebra but the answer should be the same

I dont understand but i am onky in 6th grade

Felicity Copenhaver - 5 years, 3 months ago

i divided 2(feet)÷240=120(heads) then i subtract 82 (heads)-120 (heads)=38 (heads) simpler way.

Solving without algebra.

Assume all 82 heads are pigs. We will have 82x4 = 328 legs. This is 328-240=88 extra legs.

All of these extra legs are on account of chickens that were erroneously assumed to be pigs. Mistaking a chicken for a pig results in 2 extra legs per head.

So, the 88 extra legs had to have come from 88/2 = 44 chickens.

44 chickens leaves us with 82 - 44 = 38 pigs.

Note: the 2 in the denominator above (88/2) corresponds to the difference in number is legs between the two animals. This does not correspond to the number of legs the chicken has.

Try 70 heads, 190 feet, pigs and one legged chickens.

I really like your solution. it makes a lot of sense.

Great.I like the way.

70 heads 70 feet 190feet- 70feet = 120feet (extra feet) 120 are on account of pigs erroneously assumed to be one legged chickens, therefore 120/4= 30 chickens and 70-30=40 pigs

Eugenza Ryn - 4 years, 11 months ago

There are at least 2 legs for each head. 82*2=164 Now we still have (240-164)=76 legs left. So the number of pigs, 72/2=38

Answer is 40 pigs.

Let x x be the number of pigs and y y be the number of chickens.

An equation for the total number of feet is 4 x + 2 y = 240 2 x + y = 120 \\4x+2y=240 \quad \Rightarrow \quad 2x+y=120

An equation for the total number of heads is x + y = 82 \\x+y=82

Subtracting the two equations:

2 x + y = 120 x + y = 82 x = 38 \begin{array} { llllllllll} 2x&+&y&=&120 \\ x&+&y&=&82 \\ \hline \large x&&&=&\large\color{#20A900}{\boxed{38}} \end{array}

If we assume that all the 82 heads are chickens, we will have 162 legs. So we have 76(38 pairs of legs) unaccounted for. These represent the pigs! If it is difficult to see, assume we distribute these 38 pairs of legs to the chickens( the only possible way to do the division is to exclude some chickens). Each chicken that receives a pair 'turns' into a pig, and there are 38 such chickens.

let P be the number of pigs and C be the number of chickens

the total number of feet is 240, 1 pig has 4 feet and 1 chicken has 2 feet

the total number of heads is 82, 1 pig has 1 head and 1 chicken has 1 head

we now create our equations

4P + 2C = 240

P + C = 82

By elimination or substitution method, we can find that

C = 44

and

P = 38

Take the double of heads. ie 82×2=164 Then substract it from number of feet.ie 240-164= 76. Then take the half of it.that will be the number of four leg .ie pig = 38

No need to solve the problem. Just hit and try all the options in these kinds of problems and u will get the answer.

x+y=82 , 2x+4y=240 ,, solve for y., y=38

Each animal only has one head each, so 82 heads means there are 82 animals. And there are only chickens and pigs. Assume that x is the number of pigs.

82 - x = 82 minus the number of pigs is the number of chickens; which has 2 legs each x = number of pigs, with 4 legs each

So

(82-x)*2 <<<<<<Total value of chicken feet

  • x*4 <<<<<<<<Total value of pig feet

= 240 <<<<<<<<Total number of legs

164 - 2x + 4x = 240

240 - 164 = 4x - 2x

76 = 2x

x = 38

2c+4p=240————★ C=82-p Put c value in ★we get

164-2p+4p=240 2p=76 P=38.

WHERE P IS PIG

240 feet image all 240 feet is chicken, that means we have 120 chincken then 120-82=38.

if u go option to problem you will easly get correct answer

let x = no.of pigs and y = no. of chickens x + y = 82 and 4x + 2y = 240 4x + 2(82 - x) = 240 4x - 2x = 240 - 164 x = 38. therefore 38 pigs

x+y = 82.

& 4x+ 2y = 240.

or 2x + y =120 hence, x= 38 ( x represents no. of pigs and y represents no. of chicken).
