Each side of the cube is cut into 6 equal parts to give 6 × 6 × 6 = 216 6 \times 6 \times 6 = 216 smaller cubes. All smaller cubes one layer inside, that is 4 × 4 × 4 = 64 4 \times 4 \times 4 = \boxed{64} are not painted on any of their faces.
