If Z represents a complex number in the argand plane and Z 1 < 3 |Z - 1| < 3 Then a < i Z + 3 5 i < b a < |iZ + 3 - 5i| < b What is the value of a + b ?

Z represents any point inside the circle with centre (1,0) and radius 3.

Take iota common in the second inequality. |Z - (3i + 5)| is the distance of a point Z from (5,3).

a and b correspond to the shortest and longest distances of the point Z from (5,3). These distances will lie upon the line that passes through the center and (5,3)

a=2,b=8

Bang! Correct .. Its nice to see that you made it geometrically and didn't use the triangle inequality .
