The first two (independent) columns C 1 C_1 and C 2 C_2 span the column space since C j = ( 2 j ) C 1 + ( j 1 ) C 2 C_j=(2-j)C_1+(j-1)C_2 for j > 2 j>2 . Thus the rank (which is the dimension of the column space) is 2 \boxed{2} .
