Confusing Motion

A body moves on a straight line path. For the first half of the distance it moves with a velocity 5m\s and for the rest half of the distance it moves with a velocity 8m/s for the first half of the time and with a velocity 2m/s for the rest half of the time. Fond the average velocity for the entire motion in m/s.

The answer is 5.

let total distance=d average speed= total distance traveled/total time taken i.e d/(total time) for d/2 time taken=d/(2x5) for the rest d/2- let for first half time distance is X so, X/8=(d/2-X)/2 on solving X=2d/5 time =2d/(5x8)=d/20 so avg speed =d/(d/10+d/20+d/20) avg speed =5m/s
