The figure above shows a conic section with the equation x 2 + y 2 x y 9 = 0 x^2+y^2-xy-9=0 . O O is the origin. Find the area of the quadrilateral formed when all the points intersecting the horizontal and vertical axes are joined together with straight lines.


The answer is 18.

Just put once x = 0 and find y ... then put y = 0 and find x. Now you are left with a bunch of triangles to deal with.... I haven't yet studied conics but I figured it out.
