One generation ago, Sam has 2 = 2 1 2=2^1 , two generations ago he has 4 = 2 2 4=2^2 . therefore, n n generations ago, he has 2 n 2^n ancestors. So, for n = 6 n=6 , 2 6 = 64 2^6 = \boxed {64} ancestors.
