There are 5 5 small squares and 1 1 bigger square that we can see. The whole thing is also 1 1 square. Thus we have 5 + 1 + 1 = 7 5+1+1=7 .

If you make it clear what the small squares and bigger square and whole square is, the solution would be much easier to read. I think it's sufficient to state the side lengths of these squares.

Small squares = 5 Medium squares = 1 Large square = 1 Therefore, 1 + 1 + 5 = 7
