Let Marvin's present age is x x

Then we can write, x + 38 = 3 ( x − 10 ) ⇒ x + 38 = 3 x − 30 ⇒ 2 x = 68 ∴ x = 34 x+38=3(x-10)\\\Rightarrow x+38=3x-30\\\Rightarrow 2x=68\\\therefore x=34

Finally his age was twenty years ago = 34 − 20 = 14 =34-20=\boxed{14}
