Crazy sums!

Level pending

I can correct the following sum by adding m line/s which can be done in n way/s. If m is as small as possible, then m+n=?

21 - 220 = 2-1

Note: A valid equality must be formed. No cancellations of numbers allowed too.

The answer is 5.

m=3 and n=2.

Method 1: Add a line to the minus sign on the left hand side of the equation so that I will get 21+220 which is 241. Now add 2 lines to the minus sign on the right-hand side of the equation to turn it into a 4.

Method 2:Add 3 lines to under 220 to get 220 11 \frac{220}{11} . Hence m+n = 3 + 2 = 5 \boxed{5} .

Can you define what a "stroke" is?

How do you know for sure that there are no other methods?

How about adding a stroke to the = sign to get \neq ?

Actually it is a çheating method

I already pre-empted that by asking for a valid equality.

Can you define what a "Stroke" is? Is it a line segment?

E.g. In chinese characters, a stroke is allowed to curve and move, and is something like "without lifting up your pen" (though not always).
