  1. Acetone
  2. Formaldehyde
  3. 3-Hydroxybut-2-one
  4. Cinnamic acid
  5. Phenyl Hydroxyl amine
  6. Formic acid
  7. 1-methoxyethanol
  8. Benzaldehyde

  1. Normal ketones do not respond this test

  2. All Aldehydes Respond this test

3.alpha hydroxy ketones respond this test through enolization

4.Only formic acid responds this test in carboxylic acids (if no other group is present)

5.Hydroxyl amines , their salts respond this test.

6.Formic acid responds this test

7.Hemiacetals respond this test

8.All aldehydes respond this test (whether aliphatic or aromatic)

9.Urotropine is a normal tricyclic amine does not respond this test.

10.Esters normally do not give this test.

One more information hydrazine and its salts also respond this test. Also any powerful -M Group adjacent To CHOH Group responds this test. Also Aromatic aldehydes do not respond Fehling test

Please tell me how enolization of alpha hydroxy ketone occurs. Also why hemiacetals respond this test. Is it due to OH substituting hemiacetal.

Hemi - acetal's react as after adding Tollen's reagent they covert to carbonyl compd ( due to the base present in Tollen's reagent)

They don't

Also Terminal Alkynes respond to this test!
