As shown in the figure, a total of 9 9 cuts will be required to form 4 ∗ 4 ∗ 4 = 4*4*4= 64 \boxed{64} cubes.

Each color on the left hand side shows a cut.

If stack the cut pieces on top of each other in subsequent cutting then 64 cubes can obtain with minimum six cuts .

The first cut, slice the block in half will give 2 pieces. In the second cut, put the two pieces on top of each other and cut them into 4 pieces. In the third cut gives 8 pieces. In the fourth cut, line up all 8 will give 16 pieces. In the fifth cut, will get 32 pieces. The sixth cut, will get 64 equal cubes.
