We know 24 24 inches = 2 = 2 feet. Let x x be the length of the shorter rope in feet. The longer piece will be x + 2 x + 2 feet

x + ( x + 2 ) = 30 x = 14 x + (x+2) = 30 \implies x=\boxed{14}

24 i n c h e s = 2 f e e t 24~inches=2~feet

Let x x be the shorter piece, then the longer piece is x + 2 x+2 , so we have

x + ( x + 2 ) = 30 x+(x+2)=30

2 x = 30 2 2x=30-2

2 x = 28 2x=28

x = 14 f e e t \boxed{x=14~feet}
