Cutting cake

Logic Level 1

Say you are cutting a cake. Unfortunately your knife is very blunt, so you want to use it the minimum amount of times. What is the minimum amount of times you can cut a cake that is 2cm tall and has a 5 cm radius to create 5 pieces. (The cake is circular).

The answer is 3.

You can cut the cake into quarters from the top, and then if you slice the quarters in half with 1 extra cut, you can make 8 pieces.

Or just cut one of the quarters in half (from the top) to give the five pieces you need.

Is there a way to cut it with just three cuts so that everyone gets the same amount of cake?
