Chemistry Level 2

The above are the structural formulas of two compounds which have the same molecular formula. Which of following statements is correct?

a) The bond angle α \alpha is the same as the bond angle β \beta .

b) Compound (A) is a saturated hydrocarbon and compound (B) is an unsaturated hydrocarbon.

c) The bond length between the carbon atoms is identical for all bonds.

d) None of the above

a) only b) only c) only d) only

\displaystyle\bullet α = 9 0 o \alpha = 90^o , whereas, β = 10 9 o 2 8 \displaystyle \beta = 109^o28' . So, this is incorrect.

\displaystyle\bullet Saturated means only single bonds, while Unsaturated means double bonds as well. So, this is true.

\displaystyle\bullet Double Bond is shorter in length than a single bond, so this is incorrect.

I think even the second option should be wrong..... It's degree of unsaturation is 1

alpha is 90 and thus 1st compound has much bond strain C=C bond length is lesser than C-C due to better overlapping and thus c) is correct!

Since left compound is composed of only single bonds, it is a saturated hydrocarbon. Whereas, the right compond is consisting a double bond, it is an unsaturated hydrocarbon.
